Retrospective – Altered Daily (2011)

An 11 day performance intervention series created for the Dance Umbrella. The work presents eleven different site interventions, each exploring the difficult process of archiving and capturing ephemeral performance. The work presents a pedestrian and non-expressive dance (inspired by Yvonne Rainer’s seminal work, Trio A) that borrows the costumes and music of another production each day as a means to try and recapture ‘its memory’ in the minds of the audience.

Over the 11-day period, the dance ‘borrows’ the visual aesthetics of ten works from the dance archive: The Unspeakable Story by Gary Gordon, Enter Achilles by DV8, Bluebeard by Pina Bausch, Chandelier by Steven Cohen, Daddy I’ve seen this piece six times before and I still don’t know why they are hurting each other by Robyn Orlin, Plasticisation by Nelisiwe Xaba, The Rite of Spring by Vaslav Nijinsky, Shattered Windows by Gary Gordon, Transports Exceptionnels by Dominique Bouvin.
